THE Wairarapa Mercury. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1868.

As it is now rumoured that the surveyors are to he withdrawn from the Wairarapa, we take the opportunity of commenting' on a few points pertinent to surveyors and surveying. We do not imagine that it is the intention of the Provincial Government to withdraw them for any length of time, for as we understand, they are only recalled to enable them to "plot" in detail the work they have done. It has been found in the colony of Victoria that the system of letting surveys by contract is very much more satisfactory than our present expensive (we had almost written usless) system. One chief surveyor in each district would be ample to supervise and check the work of those who took surveying contracts rom the Government. If the surveys, were open to tenders, as we suggest, it would be found that the work would be more satisfactorily—we do not say better done for those wishing to have their lands so surveyed and it would be likewise more agreeable to the surveyors, who could remain on one piece of work until it was completed, instead of being ordered from one district to another having a number of different jobs on their hands at once, and losing valuable time shifting camp at the caprice of the Government. Let it be understood Ave do not wish in any way to reflect blame upon the surveyors for the present arrangements, they are too often unjustly blamed and aspersed. The Government have the opportunity of remedying the faults and defects of their present system and in doing so they can attain what seems to be the " summum bonum' of their wishes, namely, effect a large savings. We give them these few hints which they can profit by if they wish, Verbvm sap. !
