THE WAIRARAPA RAILWAY.
We are glad to see that the Committee of the Wellington, Hutt and Wairarapa Railway are not allowing the grass to grow under their teet, or this important project to fall to the ground for want of proper pushing at the commencement. Every exertion is being made to get the preliminary survey commenced at once, the services of Mr Stewart will he placed at the disposal of the committee immediately he has concluded the work he has now in hand cf preparing the plans and specifications for the Wanganui Bridge. As the committee have also received intimation from the Superintendent that the Government will supplement whatever sum may be collected from the public for the purpose of the first expenses, circulars and collection hooks have been sent to the following gentlemen authorising them to collect money andgive receipts in their various districts: —H. Bunny, Esq.. Featherston; J. Masters, Esq., Masterton; M. Hirschherg, Esq., Greytown; J. Jordan and N. Valentine, Esqs., Hutt; W. B. Rhodes, J.Martin, and John Tally,Esqs., • for Te Aro Ward; J. C. Crawford, C. R. Carter, J. Warmoll, and J. H. Wallace, Esqs., for Lambton and and Tho-ndon Wards. C. O’Neill, Esq., C. E. has been appointed engineer, with instructions to explore and proceed with the survey of the best lines. We believe it is the intention shortly to call a public meeting in the Wairarapa for the purpose cf discussing the question - and taking names of subscribers. It will be seen that the meeting is announced for Wednesday next at 13 p.m. at Greytown.
