We trust that as many as can attend ffoSn this district will do SO. The Caeandinis. —Very'grcat disappointment was felt in Grey town' and Master ton at the non-arrival of the Carandini family to give their promised concert. Many families came twelve and fourteen miles to enjoy l the musical treat.

Telegeaph.— We are happy to state that the gentleman who. is to be in charge of the Telegrdph Office, at Peathcrston, has at length arrived, and that communication by wire with Wellington is opened. Mr A. L. Smith will for the future attend during office hours. Our readers will also notice that an advertisement appears elsewhere in our paper, calling for tenders, for the erection of a telegraphic office in Greytown. The proposed office is to be built on the north-east corner of the acre lately handed over by Mr Carter, trustee for the Small Farm Associatson, to the General Government for public purposes. We are not aware whether the Masterton Committee have, as yet, made any arrangements, as to handing over their Court-house acre, which is admirably adapted for a telegraph office. The sooner some steps, in this direction, are taken the better it will be, as arrangements can then immediately be made, to place Masterton in the same advantageous position, in the way of telegraphic communication, as Featherston and Greytown. Gkeytown Road Boaed. —The Board -met yesterday, January 3. Present:—Mr Hart Udy (Chairman); Messrs 11. H. Jackson, 1 J. Tocker, and T. Kcmpton, jun. The Chairman read a letter from the Paymaster of Roads stating that he would be prepared to make the payments required on his next journey to the Wairarapa. Mr Jackson brought under the notice of the Board an article in the “ Wairarapa Journal,” reflecting on- their proceedings with reference to Mr Baird’s letter, respecting the encroachments of the Waiohine river, and the Board directed the Secretary to furnish ji copy of their reply thereto to the “Wairarapa ■Mercury.’’ The Board farther discussed the objections of Mr Hirscherg, and agreed to let the case stand over until the holding of the Native Laud Court. The Board then adjourned to Friday fortnight, the 17th January, 1868. The Waiohike Riveb.— We have been requested by the Chairman of the Greytown Road Board, to publish the following letter addressed to Mr Baird 7 Greytown Road Board, ' ■ ■' • ■• November 23, 1867. ' Sik, —I have the honor to acknowledge the Receipt of your letter of the 21st instant, and in reply beg to state that’the Board decline to call the Public Meeting as suggested, and do not consider that . they ; .are in; a.posjtidn to undertake such a work as the prevention of-the en’doaohment'.of the,’Waiohine River.” The Board also consider that it is out of their jurisdiction, and look on it as a question for the public. I have &0., (Signed), U, Urn', Chairman.

Fibe. —On Thursday, the 19th a large stable, the 5 -property of Mr Tankersley, 1 of Opaki, near Masterton, was burnt to the A ground. A great deal of propeaty, con- ,i sisting of a reaping machine, machine, chaff-cutter, several sets of harness, " and other'stable appurtenances were also burnt, besides a quantity of wheat, &c. The oi'igin of the fire is unknown, but there are strong reasons to believe it to have been the work of an incendiary. No one seem to have seen the fire burning, and the first intimation Mr Sankersley had of his loss was from his son-in-law the next morning. Mr Tankersley estimates his loss at £SOO.

McMasters took the first prize in the vaulting with pole, when he cleared 9ft. 6iu., and he also was declared best in the hitch and kick match. The second prize, for the Reel of Tullogh, was taken by Mcßean. McMasters took the first and Mcßean the the second prize for the running high leap—the winning jump being over 4ft. 10in. The 600 yards Hurdle Race was won easily by McMasters, as was prize for the hop-step-and-jump, and became in second for the 600 yards foot race.

Fire in Wellington. —A fire took place on Tuesday last, in Wellington, by which Mr Boyd’s house, at Pipetea Point, was completely destroyed. Child Drowned at Rangitikei. —Mr Thoms had the misfortune to lose a little girl by drowning on the 7th inst. As some very incorrect statements have been the subject, we state the particdKrs child, about three and a-half years old, was playing on the margin of the Rangitikei river with her little brother. She laid herself down on the grass at the brink of the stream to drink and unfortunately slipped in. The water was not deep, probably about two feet, but the river was somewhat flooded at the time and the current ran strong. There was no help at hand and the child was carried away. Mr Thoms, who was not at home at the f.imo of the accident, got the body of his child in a few hours after, about thirty yards dowishe river. It was a sore bereavement, in which the parents have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.^- 1 Wanganui Chronicle.’
