■ Scrutator complains of the road between Greytown and Featherston and states “ that Were the Government to let this by contract instead of by day laboiir it would be cheaper for the Government and better for the settlers and that unless something more is done than at present it will almost be impassable next winter." Our correspondent does not seem to be aware that the Council only voted the munificent sum of £4O for repairs from Featherston' to Mastertom Faib Play wishes to know why the West Coast subsidy was granted to the Coaches, Viz.— £I2OO, while’ the. Bast Coast, t subsidy was, abolished.” As our representatives have promised to meet their constituents to explain their votes and proceedings at an early period, no doubt they will give the explanation' required. G.H.—The following is the amount of revenue received from land sales, Sec., in the Wairarapa exclusive of the amount derived at Wellington from the Customs, for 1866-7: —Land sales, £20,727 8s 9d; rates on land, Hookers road, Carterton, £9; Masterton district £lO3 12s lOd: assessment on sheep, £509 6s 2d ; publicans licenses £305; making a total of £21,654 7s 9d. The expenditure in the district amounted to £9300 4s The total amount received' from Wanganui during the same period (exclusive of the Customs) amounted to £9,509 75., whilst the expenditure was £22,718 11s 4d. Kate Payee.—Lands leased from Natives by Europeans are liable- to be rated,. and wo believe it is the intention Of the Boards to rate them. The Provincial Council has no, power to legislate on any matters relative to the natives, and any bill passed for the purpose of rating lands in the occupation of natives would not receive the sanction of the Governor.
