The second session of the fourth Parliament of New Zealand was prorogued on Thursday Oct. 10th by His Excellency the Governor with the usual formalities. In his speech he regrets that Parliament had not been able to provide this session a general measure for establishing local-self-government for outlying districts so essential to nourish the spirit of liberty and self-reliance. During the session 120 bills were introduced, and 00 of these passed both Houses. Amongst those in which your district is interested the Provincial Council Acts Validation Hill, the Volunteer Act Amendment Act, and the Wairarapa Race Course Act, received the Governor’s Assent. The Divorce Bill was reserved for Her Majesty’s Assent. The Volunteer Artillery furnished a guard of honor on the occasion, and they were provided with luncheon at the cost of the Government.
The Court of Appeal opened its settings on Monday. I will inform you before I close this letter of the result of the appeal in the case of Featherston v. Kennard. Mr Justice Johnston was near meeting with a serious accident on Friday. - Tho horses of the carriage in which her wa< riding took fright and galloped at a •furious rate dashing the vehicle down a precipice on the Poriua road. . Thursday, 0 a.m. The whole of the Judges are nowsitting in the Court “of Appeal. The case of Kennard v Beatherston was heard yesterday. The, Attorney General and' - Mr Borlase appear for. .the Superintendent and Mr Travers and Mr Buckley for Mr Kennard.
A Veteran Volunteer Company is about to be organized, which will comprise 'a large number of retired soldiers a meeting has been held on the subject and a considerable number of men enrolled.
