GARDENER’S CALENDAR.
A Correspondent who has had considerable experience in this district writes as follows : “The publication by you of the Gardener’s Calendar from the “ Wellington Almanac ” is likely to mislead new settlers, as however well adapted it may be for Wellington and the Hutt it.is not applicable for this district. Frost continues here if the weather keeps clear, to the 15th October, while at the Hutt it is seldom seen after the 20th September, so that all tender plants which cannot stand the frost can be sown and planted; but in the Wairarapa all plants whether vegetables or flowers must not be planted in the open air before the 15th of October such as the following :—Cucumbers, melons, tomatoes, scarlet runners, white duck runners., French runners, pumpkins, vegetable marrows, capsicums, All kinds of vegetables and flowers should be sown ac once, except where a suction can be kept up. Finish planting potatoes until after Christmas; potatoes up now should be all but smothered with mould for fear of the frost cutting them up.”
