GARDENER’S CALENDAR FOR SEPTEMBER.

Artichokes dress, clean and plant. Asparagus sow ; clean all weeds from old beds, if not done last month. Beau of all kinds plant, hoe and earth up advancing crops. Beet of all kinds sow. Broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage sow-, and plant from seed bed any strong enough, earth up advancing crops. Carrots, celery, carraway, and small salads sow. Camomile and chives plant out, no garden should be without them. Dioscorea Batales plant, this is a delicious and highly useful plant, more hardy and prolific than the sweet potatoes. They like a rather light and rich soil, for planting dig and manure well a piece of ground, in the second or third week, plant the tubers in rows one foot apart and two feet apart from row to row, it is well to have a few sticks to support the arm but not absolutely necessary. Sow endive, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsnips, parsley, peas radishes, spinach, turnips, Brussel sprouts, sea kale, tomatoes, and capsicums, also plant out from seed any sufficiently strong where they are sheltered from wind and feel the influence of the sun. Herbs of all kinds, divide the roots and make fresh plantations where necessary. Potatoes plant, also Jerusalem artichokes. Sea kale sow and plant. Marjoram and penny royal plant. If not already done, plant out eschalots, garlic, chives, onions, &c. This may be said (weather permitting) to be the month for sowing and planting all general crops.

FRUIT, All pruning not done should now be finished as early as possible, and grafting with all despatch, as the dry weather may set in early. In pruning plants, where the chief object is their flowers, attend to the mode of bearing these. In short, never begin to cut a tree before having a clear and distinct idea of what you wish to attain, is it health, shape, size, leaves, shoots, flowers or roots ? Strawberry beds clean and give a light top dressing. Raspberry plantations should now be finished olf, if not already done. All kinds of fruit trees should now be finished planting, but if not, especial care should be taken in the manner of planting* Gooseberry and currant trees in small gardens, we would recommend the espalier training as the most convenient for gathering and also cleaning. In this month, although not exactly gardening, we would recommend our country friends to sow, say l-16tb of an acre of canary, rape, hemp, and linseed, as they all fetch high prices in Wellington, and must be remunerative to the grower. FLOWERS. German and ten weeks stocks sow All kinds of hardy and half hardy annuals may be sown where they are intended to bloom. Pansies shift where necessary and peg each shoot doWn to prevent the wind breaking them off. All kinds of flowering shrubs should now be planted out. All fibrous rooted plants may still be taken up, divided, and replanted. Bulbs for late flowering should be planted without delay. Hardy biennials plant. Dahlias should bo planted, if for early blooming a little bottom heat will accelerate their progress. Tender annuals sow in slight bottom head with shelter by glass. All pot plants should now receive their final shifting, give good drainage, fnd a little pounded charcoal on the top of the drain is beneficial to the plant,.
