TOWN NEWS OF THE WEEK.

The disscussion on the estimates having, on the motion of Mr Vogel, been postponed until Thursday, renders it unnecessary to refer at length to the Parliamentary proceedings in our present issue. The despatch re-calling Sir George Grey is to be published. We understand that its tone is unnecessarily offensive.

Lieut. Colonel McDonald arrived in town on Tuesday, owing to the interference of officers of the Native Department with his proceedings. Mr Fox is to return to the colony by the November mail. A serious accident occurred on the s.s. Kaikoura by which several parties were seriously injured. A bolt flew out of the boiler which caused the escape of the steam which scalded several persons one of whom has since died from the injuries he received. Captain Machin, late of the Kaikoura, has been dismissed the Panama Company’s service for drunkenness, and his certificate has been' ancelled.

Since our article was in type we notice that Mr G. Graham has given notice that he will move:—“ That with a view to a reduction in the cost of the establishment of the General Government, it is expedient that the salaries of the officers of the General Government be reduced from the present estimate in the following proportions:—Upon salaries of £SOO and upwards, a reduction of twenty per cent. Upon salaries between £250 and £SOO, a reduction of ten per cent.. William By an, in the illicit-distillery case, has been fined £IOO, and forfeited the horse and dfay.
