Annual School Meeting.—We direct attention to the advertisement relative to the Annual Meeting of the Rate-payers of the Greytown School district, which will be held at the School-house Greytown, this afternoon at 2 p.m. We trust the meeting will prove as I “ r s'i ™vWiy. nml aa parnestM the importance of the subject it will be. called upon to consider so imperatively demands. Prize Firing. —The following is the scoring of the ties of the three best shots at the late Provincial Prize Firing:—Porirua 13 points; Masterton 10points; Greytown9points. Each of the two first competitors will be entitled to receive a valuable rifle; Volunteer Land Bill.—lt affords us much pleasure to state that owing to the prompt action taken by Captain Hare and the Masterton Rifle Volunteers in the matter, the Defence Minister has introduced a Bill into the House of Representatives which will ensure to Volunteers a remission certificate in the purchase of land, to the amount of £3O, after five years service. Inquest. —An inquest was held before Dr. Spratt, the Coroner for the district, at Tuck’s Hotel, Masterton on Monday the 12th inst., touching the death of T. Morris, carpenter, who was accidentally drowned on Saturday last in attempting to cross the Ruamahunga river, near Masterton, and whose body was found on the banks of the riverlnear the residence of Mr Masters. It appeared from the evidence that the usual ford had become unsafe owing to alterations in the river bed during the recent floods, and that when the unfortunate man attempted to cross, the water was in a muddy state. The jury returned a verdict of “ accidental death.”
Postponement. — A notice has been issued by the judge of the Native Land Court that the sitting of the Court at Wellington on the 9th August is postponed to Wednesday the 28th August owing to the number of cases yet to be disposed of at Greytown. Aekest.— A man by the name of Smith Orton was arrested at Greytown on Wednesday the|l4th by Police Constable Butler, on the charge of uttering a cheque for £6 10s on the Bank of New South Wales, he knowing at the time that it w T as valuless.
Accident.— lt is feared that another fatal accident has occured in crossing the Ruamahunga. Mr. Thomas Gray who had occasion to cross that river on Saturday last has not since been heard of, arid as his horse had returned home riderlesss it is generally believed that he has been drowned in the river. Too much care cannot be manifested in crossing the rivers in this district at this eeason of the year.
