INDEPENDENCE OF PARLIAMENT.
The Bill brought in by Mr Reynolds for the exclusion of paid officials from Parliament was lost on its second reading on a division by a majority of 36 to 20, Mr. Bunny, amongst others, voting against it. There were some members who pretended to think the Bill went too far, and there were others who voted againstit on the absurd plea that it did not go far enough. But it was really the votes of the officials who decided the fate of the Bill, and as they were directly and personally interested in the motion their votes according to “ May ” ought not to have been counted. There were more members besides officers of the General Government who were afraid of the Bill going into Committee. The Provincialists feared that a clause would be inserted disqualifying Provincial as well as General officials from having seats in the House, there were others feared that a clause might be carried disqualifying other persons besides officials from holding senatorial honors. Had the Bill passed, Superintendents might still have bad seats in Parliament by making them «x officio members of the Legislative Council.
