STAMP DUTIES.

Notwithstanding the large revenue derived from this source it does not appear, as -was by many fondly anticipated, that the Government have any intention either to increase the amount at present made to the Provinces from the Customs duties, to lower the present tariff, or to hand over to the Provinces fi-oiu the Custom’s duties, any share of the stamp duties for the payment of those departments which were it not for the existence of Provincial Governments, would have to be paid for but of the general revenue. The following question waa put to the Colonial Treasurer by Mr Borlase;— Whether it is the intention of the Government to continue the Stamp Duties ? Also, whether the surplus moneys raised by the Stamp Duties for the past financial year, beyond the Government Estimates, are to be treated as monies arising from the Customs Revenues, and if three-eighths of such surplus revenues arc to he given to the Provinces ? The lion Mr Fitzherbcrt said the Government had no intention to discontinue the Stamp Duties. There would not, he believed, be any surplus over the estimate of the Government, hut if there were it was provided by the clause of the Act that the surplus would go to the ordinary revenue of the Colony.
