TOWN NEWS OF THE WEEK.

The Panama mail Steamer Rakaia arrived in Wellington at an early hour on Tuesdaymorning bringing a large English Mail. No later news from Europe than that received via Suez. The Superintendent left Wellington on Sunday last for Manawatu, and is expected to be absent until the meeting of the Assembly. The ship Lochnivar arried at Wellington on Monday from London, she brought only one passenger, bht a large general cargo. Monday being St. John’s day was appointed by the Freemasons for the laying of the foundation stone of their new hall in Boulcott street, and a banquet was held in the evening in honor of the occasion. Dr Allison, late of Rangitikei, died at St. Peters on his passage to England of yellow fever. Mrs Wilkinson, of Oriental Bay, died on the 25th inst., deeply regretted.
