LOCAL NEWS.

The Meeting on Wednesday.—We direct the particular attention of the farmers of the Wairarapa to the advertisement calling a General Meeting of those persons who are favorable to the formation of an Agricultural and Pastoral Association for the district, to be held at the “Rising Sun,” Greytown, onJWednesday, at 3 o’clock, when the report of the Sub-Committee appointed at a previous meeting will be submitted for its consideration and adoption. We earnestly hope that there will be a large attendance. We believe that the Committee recommend theholdingofperiodical shows of fruits, stock, and produce; that there shall be quarterly meetings of the members when papers on farming subjects will be read and discussed; that subscription of £l shall be paid annually by members, which will be reduced to 10s. in the case of those who are members of any Farmers Club in the district; and that a subscription of £lO shall constitute membership for life. H. S. Wardell Esq. has consented to act as Treasurer to the Association

and Sir. B. Lucas has been appointed Secretary, Ekbata. —We regret to say that a number of literal errors appeared in our last, and we sincerely thank the editor of the “ Independent” for having, in that amiable, gentle, and Christian spirit, for which he is so remarkable, called our attention to one passage, which certainly is, as it stands, downrij ht nonsense. The passage referred to has the figure of 3 instead of 1, while the important little monosyllable “ no,’’ in another place, is omitted. They are clearly typographical errors, and were they not so exhibit no indications of mental terror, a weak head, or a bad heart. The passage, which is full of meaning, ought to have been printed as follows: —The no confidence motion was lost on Tuesday, by a majority of 14 against 12. In other words there were 12 members of the Council who bad no confidence in the present Executive, and 14 who had no confidence in the men who were to succeed them.

The Gbettown Cemetery.— We reprint from the “ Wanganui Times ” the following remarks on the Cemetery at Wanganui, because they are quite as applicable to the Greytown Cemetery and to the Greytown Trustees as to those of Wanganui. We are quite sure that if the Trustees would only convene a meeting of the settlers and lay proposals it, that they would be cordially supported many steps having for their object the fencing in, and otherwise improving the Cemetery at Greytown. Our Wanganui contemporaiy says“ The road from Churton’s Creek to the' Cemetery is so very bad that we never could imagine that any person in this community would try to make it worse. The Chairman of the Town Board however, advertises a reward of £2 to any person giving such information as will lead to the conviction of the parties who have removed material from that road. The road, the fence and general state of the cemetery reflect hut little credit upon the trustees. The Town Board—or rather their Chairman —offered some months ago to pay one half the costs of constructing the road, and we feel satisfied that the Trustees would have no difficulty in collecting the remainder from the inhabitants if they would only take the trouble to move in the matter. Some hundreds of people in this town and district have vested interests in the Wanganui Cemetery, and none of them, if called upon, would refuse to contribute towards the fencing and improvement of the place and the repairs of the road leading to it.
