PUBLIC MEETING AT FEATHERSTON.

A meeting of rate-payers was held at Featherston on Saturday last, the 4th May, Mr R. Blade, in the chair, when the following resolutions were carried unanimously. Moved by Mr R. Lucas, seconded by Mr J. Donald— That the Board of Wardens, having neglected to act on the vote of the last annual meeting which granted a rate of 6d per acre, by adjourning their last meeting to the 2nd June next in order that Mr Bunny might endeavor to pass a Bill through the Provincial Council altering the mode of assessment, have lost the confidence of the ratepayers of this district, and that this meeting do request them to resign. Moved by Mr C. W. Jackson, seconded by Mr Josias Tocker— That Mr Bunny be requested by the electors of this district to use his influence in the Council to prevent the assessment for making and repairing roads from being altered from an acreage to a property tax. Moved by Mr C. W, Jackson, seconded by Mr Lucas— That in the opinion of this meeting it is advisable that the Western Lake settlers be allowed to separate from the Featherston Road District, taking the boundary between Mr. Lucena and Mr Wilkinson, as the boundary of the Featherston District. Moved by Mr Wardell, seconded by Mr. Buckridgp.— That Mr Bunny be requested to apply to tbe Government for a sufficient sum of money to be placed on the estimates for the completion of the road between Featherston and the Waihenga Ferry, from Revans-street to the Tauherenikau river. Mr. Donald expressed his willingness that the road should pass through his land. Moved by Mr. Lucas, seconded by Mr. Jackson. That a copy of the resolutions passed at this mooting he forwarded to Mr Bunny, as Chairman to the Board of Wardens and one of the members for the West Wairarapa, and also to the local paper. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the Chairman, after which Mr Gundy proposed that a Farmer’s Club should be started at Featherston, which proposition was warmly received, and twenty-seven of those present recorded their names as members.
