EAST WAIRARAPA ELECTION.
(To the Editor of the Wairarapa Mercury.) Woodside, April 17, 1867. Sir, —ln reply to the letter of your correspondent “East Wairarapa,” which appeared in your last issue, I beg to state, — I do believe in a railroad and that the smile witli which the proposal is often met is, as some French writer has stated, more often a sign of ignorance than of pleasure; that we should look to the United States for circumstances ; to France for organization; and to England as a warning against roguery and waste in such matters. Whilst on roads I will add that I consider all, which of course includes main lines, should be subject equally to rates, the main lines, as in Canada, being subsidised to the extent they were damaged by other than local traffic. The present plan may be characterised as giving more to those who have much and taking from those who have nothing, if you can. I am in favor of elected District Road Boards, as a portion of local self-government, but think the district should be enlarged and that there should be a power of appeal against obstructives.
I am in favor of an acreage tax, it is consistent with true Political Economy, in the principles of which I have been a believer for a long period. If those who are interested ip the Lake District, would do their duty as electors, by taking more interest in the public welfare, they would find it would not be without special advantage. The complaint can only be regarded as self-censure, in which manner I hope it may at an early period prove wholesome. SAMUEL REVANS,
