EXPORT OF HONEY.

CENTRAL DEPOT IN WELLINGTON MOOTED. The returns of the shipment of hoveymade last season through Messrs Lovell and Christmas were submitted at a meeting of a sub-committee of the Beekeepers’ Association at Haw era last Saturday. These showed a return of £4O per ton. Expenses amounted to about £7 per ton, leaving a satisfactory net price for shippers. After a good deal of [discussion it was decided to advise members of the association that a similar shipment will be made this season, and that a remit be sent to the Federal Beekeepers’ Conference at Wellington, in June, suggesting that, the G wernmont be asked to establish a central depot in Wellington' where ail honey for export from the Dominion be sent ane graded, and sent home through the one firm. It was decided to recommend the conference to interview the Department of Agriculture and have the scheme in going order for next season. Apropos the export of honey, the High Commissioner, reporting on shipments made to London in 2lb blocks .wrapped in parchment paper, and enclosed in cardboard boxes, considers that there is little likelihood of a payable market being found for honey packed in this form. The trade expressed the opinion th it the quality of the honey was excellent, but in every instance the form 'of package was condemned as being unsuitable for British market. Retailers approached on the matter said the package would not suit their trade, as, when taken from the cold chamber and exposed on the counter for sale in warm weather, the ‘honey would get soft and the package would leak becoming dirty and unsightly. They also say that as honey packed in this form is a proprietary article, the packages bearing the apiarist’s name on them, they would not care to handle it. The consumers say that to strip the paper from the honey when required for use is not easy, Lni that the process is messy, as .- T el 1 as wasteful, a good deal o* Me honey sticking to the paper.
