The Waipa Post. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1911. THE ELECTIONS.
ROUGHLY and hurriedly summed up it would appear that the Ward Administration will have the greatest difficulty in whipping up a majority in the new Parliament. One striking feature is the almost total absence of Labour members, although that party may succeed in winning several seats at the second ballot. feature is be no less f TOiuK;.t)ailb'is; of these the-Government 1 is safe to win four, while nearly double that number..^are certainties for the Opposition, leaving 21. very much in doubt. Of the 43! seats decided the Opposition-/ wins 21, the Government 19, while 2 seats go to Independents, and one to Labour. ;JRhese, added to the apparent, hertainties of the second the Opposition 28, government 23, and Independents 3. which shows apparently iliat the Government must secure ■fibre* than of . the 21 I loubtfut'in seats to epable it :o have ailpane working majority. Phis is highly improbable, and ye are forced to the conclusion, is already stated, that the Ward Administration will have the greatest•. difficulty in whipping ip a majority in' 'the new parlianent. Referring to the licensing [uestion,. from the very meagre esults to hand there seems to be 10 doubt but that national proibition is more favoured than Deal option. Our own electorate /bile falling 175 votes short of
local prohibition, carried national no-license by 125 votes. If that may be taken as a guide for the whole Dominion, then we venture the opinion that national prohibition has met with much greater approval than its most sanguine supporters had expected.
