OTOROHANGA BRANCH FARMERS' UNION.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held on Friday afternoon. There was a fair atfcjendance, Mr Jno. Ormsby Jnr. Bk-:g in the chair. jF Alteration of Mails. ** A letter was received from the Chief Postmaster, Auckland, stating that the request to alter the closing time of mails south of Otorohanga to 4.45 p.m. would be acceded to. Taxing Itinerant Traders. A letter was received from the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce asking if Otorohanga had -. any system of collecting special license fees from those firms who are in the habit of sending men around and opening up business for two or three days. —It was decided to reply that at present there was no system, but the meeting was unanimously in favour of something being clone ~m the direction indicated, and the secretary is to ask the local town council's co-operation in formulating some scheme whereby the existing evil can be remedied. Different Railway Charges. Ihe Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce wrote with reference to the various charges made by the railway for similar classes of goods, and instancing that the rate on sugar is 30s per ton higher than the rate on flour. —It was decided to reply that the local branch is in sympathy, and will be pleased to act with the Chamber of Commerce in endeavouring to secure more uniform rates. Analysing Soils. The Auckland Farmers' Union wrote stating they had arranged for an office for a laboratory, and asking what the local branch could do in the way of helping to purchase chemicals, etc. The Union have secured the services
of an expert analyst to analyse soils for members of the Union, and to give the results of anaj^§* *i„, m *rr~f m ~r-\\ntt-~" l * asa te ,a * mi ' !k * m^ mrveryday language. Space at Agricultural Show. The Auckland Farmers' Union wrote that they will have a tent at the Auckland Show for members of the Farmers' Union, and that an expert would be in attendance to explain a special process for rapid milk testing. Information re Crops. A letter was also received asking for information of the area in crops in the district, and the quality and class of crop, also the percentage of lambing, etc.— It was "%ft to the secretary to reply. Questions for Candidates. A long list of questions to be submitted to candidates for Parliamentary honours was left to the secretary to attend to. Railway Gates at Kio Kio.
A letter was received in reference to the railway gates at Kio Kio. The lack of system of handling goods at that station was also pointed out.
