Considerable interest is being taken in connection with the election of members of the Waipa County Council. Polling booths have been established throughout the district, and the poll to be taken to-morrow will doubtless be one of considerable interest.
As a result of the meeting called for the purpose of forming a cricket club at Kihikihi, it was found impossible to form a team strong enough for the Waipa Union contests. It is hoped, however, to get a team together to engage in occasional friendly games with outside clubs.
Guidance for piano buyers is offered in the announcement of the British and Continental Piano Company on page 1. This oldestablished firm allows inquirers to consider their purchases in peace, and does not make them the subjects of a shoal of subsequent letters and circulars.
The applicants for section 82, Teasdale Settlement, were surprised on reading the Auckland newspaper report of the ballot to find it therein slated that there was only one applicant for the section. This was brought under the notice of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, who has replied to the postmaster at Te Awamutu as follows :—" In reply to your inquiry, I have to inform you that the newspaper report re section 82, Teasdale Settlement, is evidently in error, as there were 22 applicants in the ballot for the same."
We again remind our readers that to-morrow (Wednesday) will be observed as a holiday by the business people of Te Awamutu.
Mr F. C. Daniell, architect, has accepted the tender of Mr Hastings for the erection of a dwelling for Mr G. Gifford, in Teasdale Street. The contract price is £595.
The-Rev. Woollass left by the express yesterday for Dunedin for the purpose of attending the Presbyterian Assembly in that town. Mr Wooliass will be away for about a fortnight.
The Rev. R. S. Gray, who is advertised to speak in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, has just returned from a trip through the prohibition States of America. Whilst he was there he thoroughly investigated the question of prohibition, and is therefore in a position to speak with authority on the subject. Mr Gray has been specially asked to reply to certain statements that have been circulated by the brewers as to what has taken place in America, and will do so on Thursday evening.*
