BUILDING OPERATIONS IN TE AWAMUTU.

There is every sign of building activities in Te Awamutu continuing for an indefinite period. Each day finds some new 'work put in hand. Upwards of £12,000 worth of work is in progress and buildings valued from £3,000 to £5,000 will be commenced almost immediately. This is exclusive of the tenders closing on 29th. November for the erection of the Mental Hospital at Tokanui, the plans for which are now to be seen at the Post Office. This extensive work —of which we hope to give some particulars in our next issue —will involve an expenditure of many thousands of pounds. One half of this structure will be in brick, the remainder in wood. Messrs McLean and Sons have practically completed the outside work of the handsome ferro-concrete block being erected for Mr J. B. Teasdale, and the same contractors have the preliminary work on the new ferro - concrete bridge in Arawata Sreet over the Mangahoe well in hand, and expect to have the work finished before the end of November. The brickwork at the new post office with the exception of the chimney tops, is completed, and a few days should see the roofing well in hand. The contractor (Mr Orr) has made very satisfactory progress, and unless delayed by the tower —for which as yet no instructions are to hand—he should have the work completed well within contract time,- 28th January, 1912. "Bockett's' Buildings" are almost ready for occupation and form a decided ornament to the town. This handsome brick structure is the work of Contractor Johns. Mr Abbott's buildings (Mr T. H. Lenehan, contractor) containing four shops and offices, etc., are now well under way. This building is in wood but the remainder of the Alexandra Street frontage is to be the site of a double fronted brick shop. Messrs Wheeler and Irvine are

busy with Dr. Henderson's new ferro-concrete residence, and all other contractors are fully employed with private residences within Te Awamutu.

Among the prospective buildings are the Wesleyan parsonage, the Presbyterian Church, new shops ine Alexandra Street, the Coronation Memorial Band Rotunda and several private residences. There is little doubt that immediately the Crown sections opposite the Post Office are available good business premises will be • built thereon. In this connection it will be interesting to know that Mr James Lyons has decided to have his buildings in Alexandra Street put back to the proper street line-so that it will not now be long before our main street presents a more uniform appearance. Mr Lyons is to be commended for so incommoding himself for the general good.

The extensions and new verandah at the Railway Station are nearing completion.
