THE PIG INDUSTRY.
“ The experience we have had in connection with a trial purchase of pigs has been such that the industry requires carefpl attention,” remarked Mr J. C. Cooper at the annual meeting of the Wellington Farmers’ Cooperative Meat Freezing Company,' He added : “ Out of 10,000 pigs put through works in Auckland, 3% per cent, had been condemned, 17% per cent, rejected, and 79 per cent only passed as suitable for export. Our company had last season purchased I3S pigs, and of these 21 had been condemned, 61 rejected, and 53 passed as fit for export. These are startling figures, and I hope they are not a fair average of the pigs in the district. Some of our pigs were obtained from districts to tfie south of Masterton, and others from districts to the north. The position is certainly a serious one, and should be taken in hand at once by the farmers.”
