KIHIKIHI.

(Own correspondent.)

“An Evening with Poets,” arranged for this week’s meeting of the Literary and Debating Society provided entertainment both interesting and edifying. Items were contributed by almost all present. The different

poems read covered a wide range of subjects and authors, the varied programme thus maintaining a high level of interest. Mr E. Cogan was a most efficient chairman. Apart from providing entertainment, the Literary and Debating Society has been most successful. Evidence of latent

ability displayed by novitiates, who have from time to time been appointed to the duties of the chair, and the spirited nature of the debates, have proved its high educational value. Owing to a sitting of _ the Native Land Court, Kihikihi is at present the centre of attraction from the Maoris from surrounding

districts. Since Monday the in- ' flux of natives of all ages and ranks has been going on, and now the Maori is everywhere in

evidence. The Court will most probably be here for several weeks, as a considerable amount of work has to be gone through.

Among other important business, the satisfaction of Native interests in connection with the acquisition by Government of the Tokanui blocks will be undertaken.
