TE AWAMUTU V. OHAUPO

The long-looked-for return match between Te Awamutu and Ohaupo took place on Saturday last at Ohaupo, when two strong teams took the field to try conclusions for the second time this season. Ohaupo kicked off, and play centred in Te Awamutu’s 25, but a well-judged kick by Cox relieved. Ohaupo got on a good passing rush, but the defence was sound. From a series of scrums about half-way, Cunningham ‘secured, and punting

high, gave his side a good chance *to score, but Mofatt, taking the ball splendidly, saved what appeared to be a score, he finding the line at half-way. The visitors now became aggressive, and a splendid passing run by Shine. Laurie, Cox and Spiers ended in the latter kicking but in Ohaupo’s 25. Te Awamutu were now getting all the best of matters. From a passing rush Kay secured from the side of a scrum, passed to Cox, who in turn transferred to Spiers, who, with a brilliant run outpaced the opposition and drew first _ blood for Te Awamutu. liking the kick himself he kicked a fine goal. Te Awamutu

5, Ohaupo 0. Play now became r exciting, and Ohaupo looked like scoring on several occasions, but the good tackling of the visitors proved a stumbling-block. When the teams lined up for the second half, Ohaupo, following up their kick, had the visitors on the defence, and went within an ace of scoring, Fawkett being grassed within a yard of the line. Te Awamutu gradually worked play into ,the blacks’ 25, but Mofatt, picking up smartly, found the line at the half-way peg. Change ends brought new life to Ohaupo, and after an exchange of kicks, Ohaupo swooped down on the visitors and scored a well-earned try. The kick at goal failed. From the kick-off the visitors rallied, and Shine secured, and , passing in the nick of time, started a passing rush. Spiers cross-kicked under the Ohaupo goal, and Te Awamutu’s fast

forwards, following up the kick, ended in Ryder scoring the best try of the match. The kick at goal was a failure. The whistle sounded with the scores; Te Awamutu 8, Ohaupo 3. The winning team played above expectations, and the result came as a surprise. Spiers and Kay stood out as the best backs on the ground, while Cox, Shine and Laurie played good games. The forwards , vfere a r hard-working lot, and the pick-of these McConkey (2), Cunningham and Ryder shone out most. For Ohaupo, Mofatt and the Fawketts, in the back division, and Urquart and Carroll among the forward s 3, tried hard to avert defeat. Mr Alf. Leach acted as referee and gave entire satisfaction.
