The Waipa Post. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY TUESDAY, JULY 4, 1911. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

IN order to fall into line with adjoining towns, it is time the question of forming . a Chamber of Commerce was considered by the business portion of this community. It may be considered premature by some, but we are of the opinion that a properly constituted Chamber of Commerce would be of great service to the town. On several occasions lately, when the question of holidays has been before the public, we have felt the lack of some one who had the authority to decide on behalf of the business people what should be done. Lacking this authority, we have no concerted action. Not only in the matter of holidays, would a Chamber of Commerce be useful, but in a thousand and*one different ways it could serve the community. At the present time there is urgent need for some one to take united action to prevent the railway authorities from spending money upon the present unsatisfactory and inadequate buildings which have to do duty as Railway Station and offices. A very strong case could be made out against such a course of procedure, and an equally strong case in favour of a new building altogether, but what is everybody's business is usually done by no one, and if we had a united body of business people, who could speak for the whole community, we should be more likely to get the needs of the district attended to. The charter of such an institution would be on these lines. The duties of a Chamber of Commerce would be to receive and collect information regarding all public acts or other matters affecting the interests of Te Awamutu and suburban districts, with a view to the removal of evils, the redress of grievances, the promotion of the trade of Te Awamutu, and the best interests of the whole district. Ihese would be some of the duties of such an institution, and we are certain that they will commend themselves to every good citizen, and all who desire the growth and advancement of the district. There can be no question, but that a corporate body is needed, and needed at once. As we have said, there is work, and in heaps, awaiting such a body, and until we get one, this work will be undone and the community will suffer. We commend the idea to our business men, and hope that some action will be taken in the matter, as undoubtedly such a movement would have the support of the public, as it would work for the public good. We shall be glad to receive opinions or correspondence on the question.
