DISTRICT NEWS.

KIHIKIHI.

(Own Correspondent.)

The weekly meeting of th e Literary and Debating Society was held as usual, in the club room on Tuesday evening.

A "journal" comprising articles on a variety of subjects from the pens of different members provided an excellent evening's entertainment.

Mr W. Hume-Jones, in a cleverly written " editorial" expounded the aims and ideals by which the " journal" hoped to justify its existence. Mr Geo. McGhie contributed a particularly interesting article on " Kihikihi as I remember it 30 years ago," and produced old household accounts, which in addition to their antiquarian value, provided the basis for an interesting comparison of the foodprices of to-day with those ruling as far back as 1872. Several other articles were contributed, and all proved intensely interesting, revealing, as they did, considerable originality on the part of the writers. The Hockey Club, or such of its members as were available, met for practice on Wednesday afternoon, and distinguished itself by an alarming record of casualties. Mr Geo. McGhie was placed hors de combat, and necessitated prompt medical aid. Hockey clubs having the temerity to challenge the Kihikihi players are earnestly requested to enter upon the contest garbed in suitable armour, otherwise we do not see how they are to escape utter and hopeless decimation.
