The Waipa Post PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY. TUESDAY, JUNE 27, 1911. TE AWAMUTU RAILWAY STATION.

THE proposal of the Railway Department to erect a verandah atthe Te Awamutu railway station was a. matter brought forward at a public meeting held on Saturday, and we are pleased to notice that Te Awamutu residents are fully alive to the interests of both the town and the Railway Department, by vigorously protesting against the action of the Department by passing the resolution appearing in another column. With this resolution we are in full sympathy. For some time this proposal has been under consideration by the Department’s engineers and we believe would have been 'completed ere this but for the question of the advisability of the expenditure of public money upon an old building. When it became known that an engineer had inspected the building with a view of the work being taken in hand right away public objection (if it counts for anything) was at once made. That the present building is quite inadequate to the requirements of the rapidly-rising district must be very evident to the Department. A glance at the returns should convince them that better accommodation must be provided at an early date to compete with the rapidly-increas-ing traffic. It has been stated on good authority that the Te Awamutu returns in every section have almost doubled themselves within the last twelve months. It would be useless for us to refer to the accommodation provided in the present building, or, at least, series of sheds, as their most prominent feature —want of convenience —must have been apparent to all our readers. The waiting rooms and public portion generally are a disgrace, while the accommodation provided for the staff is absolutely devoid of any convenience. The endeavour to patch a building which for 30 years has answered the purpose, and is now far too small for the rapidly - increasing traffic, is absurd, and we feel sure that the Department will very soon realise the absurdity of the proposal, and we trust at an early date to see the matter taken in hand and arrangements made for the erection of a building which will better answer the requirements of the Department at Te Awamutu. To this end we urge every resident to combine in an endeavour to stay the expenditure of any public money upon a building which should be condemned, and feel sure the Department will readily accede to their very reasonable request.
