ENGLAND'S BUTTER TRADE.
CHANCES FOR NEW ZEALAND. The following is from a recent issue of the London "G/ocer " : "We take the opportunity of wishing bon voyage to Mr W. F. Chrichton, of Manchester, who was formerly the honorary secretary of the British Committee of Danish Importers, and who.has just embarked upon the Macedonia for an extended trip to Australia and New Zealand. The object is to further the interests of Messrs W. Weddel and Co., Ltd., the well-known butter importers, of London, and with his experiev ce in the b_rtter trade, especially in colonial products, the visit should be productive of much good. There can be no doubt that there are great possibilities in this country forcolonial produce, for the butter merchants are by no means satisfied with the way the Scandinavian business is manipulated : in fact, it is no secret to say that the trade at present is hardly worth the while. We are of opinion that if the colonies could send us a regular supply of butter all the year round it would provide them with a weapon to compete on much better terms with the Scandinavians. We believe that Mr Chrichton will be able to convey to the colonies such practical information, of our requirements, particularly the conditions which prevail in the north of England, as will bring about an advancement down under, and be to the betterment of the butter trade in this country. It may be mentioned that Mr Chrichton was lately appointed a director of one of the largest cotton-spinning . companies, and we trust that his business trip to Australia and New Zealand will bring him further laurels. He is expected to arrive Home about the end of the year."
