RANGIAOHIA.
(Own Correspondent.)
The farewell social held here on Friday evening last was a distinct success. Fortunately, the evening turned out very fine, the attendance was remarkably good —in fact, everything was conducive to the successful result
mentioned. The programme consisted of a concert, during which there was an interval for presentations ; refreshments ■ and the inevitable dance to wind up. Mr Thos. Weal presided, and made an ideal chairman; in fact, the lively manner in which he kept things moving largely tended to the successful issue. The following ladies and gentlemen very kindly assisted at the concert: Mesdames Woollass and Herbert Mandeno, the Rev. Mr Woollass, Messrs Stewart, Saunders, Land, and Storey. Each item being so ably rendered and so enthusiastically received, it is needless to individualize, but to generalize, the warm thanks and gratitude expressed by the chairman to the ladies and gentlemen mentioned, were fully endorsed by one and all present. During the interval, Mr Thos. Weal took the opportunity of presenting Mesdames M. H. Mandeno, Jno. Ingham and Geo. Paul each with a silver teapot as a token of the very great esteem in which each was held by all in Rangiaohea, and also as an expression of thanks for the very many kind services rendered by those ladies in helping in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the district. Mr Weal also re-
ferred to the regret felt by one and all at the departure of the three families from the district, and mentioned the one consolation we all felt at their not going far from us. In referring to the assistance rendered to the district by Messrs Mandeno, Ingham and Paul* the chairman said that as far as Mr Mandeno was concerned, he (the chairman) had known Mr Mandeno for over 30 years, and during that time the latter had never spared himself in any way possible, when help was required in any matter connected with the welfare of Rangiaohia, and gave as instances the very great interest taken by that gentleman in school, hall, and postal matters generally. The, chairman’s able and in-
teresting address was responded to by Messrs Paul, Ingham and Mandeno. Mr Paul came prepared with a long speech (at least so he said), but owing to the lateness of the hour and other circumstances (mostly the latter) contented himself with thanks ('very briefly) one and all. Mr Ingham, who had been asked to respond by Mr Paul (for the latter and himself) was so taken back at the mention of Mr Paul’s long speech that he collapsed, just being able to say a few words expressive of gratitude fo all before he sought seclusion. After Mr M. H. Mandeno had also thanked one and all for the ' nice things said and done, the concert was resumed. This again giving way to a highly enjoyable dance, which was kept up with great vigor until “no tales told.” At the usual weekly meeting of the Young People’s Class held on Tuesday evening last, the Rev. Woollass kindly came out and gave a most interesting and instructive address on the “Transfiguration.” At the close of the address a most hearty vote of thanks was tendered by the members of the class to the Rev. Woollass, who in reply stated he was always ready and willing to come to help, a statement quite borne out by his previous kind attendance and help.
