TE AWAMUTU GIRLS’ CLUB.
A most enjoyable book evening in connection with the above Club was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday. Those present, though not exceedingly large in numbers, were very enthusiastic, as was shown by the interest taken, and the number of books represented. After allowing an hour for the distinguishing of the various titles, the totals were taken, which resulted in Mrs Wm. Taylor with 16 and Rev. Woollass with 15, gaining the first prizes in the ladies’ and gentlemen’s sections respectively. Misses E. Jones and C. Kirkham, each with 15, made an easy second. / The Rev. W. Woollass, on behalf of the President (Miss Stewart) presented the prizes, and in doing so spoke of the success that was attending the club, and congratulated the members on the enthusiastic manner in which they carried out their respective duties.
A feature of the evening was the cooking competition for members. For this section Messrs Stewart and White acted as judges. Their decision resulted in Miss Bockett gaining the first prize, the second prize going to Miss K. Allen. Mr White presented the prizes tor this section, and in a few well-chosen words commented upon the difficulty of awarding the prizes, all competitors showing a decided knowledge of the art of cooking. Several songs were rendered, which were greatly appreciated. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a most enjoyable evening, and what, we trust, will be but the forerunner of many similar entertainments.
