ON BUTTER PRICES.

THE AUSTRALIAN QUOTES.

As the price of butter sold in New Zealand for local consumption is at present a fairly important topic, the following from the Australian agents of a Wellington firm should be of interest. The report is dated April 13 : —•'

“Production in the coastal areas, continue on a very large scale. Inland, however, there is a perceptible decline in the output, and hence a good demand for butter has sprung up from many of the towns in that part of the State. The Sydney market is firm for best bi'ands at 86s. In Melbourne, finest makes are realising from oid. to iod., while in Brisbane from 88s to 90s is being paid for best makes of salted butter for local consumption. The high price obtaining in the Northern Sta.te is in a great measure due to factories packing a very large portion of. their output unsalted for consignment on their own account to the United Kingdom.”
