LOCAL AND GENERAL.

As anticipated, the hockey season has opened well in Te Awamutu. On Wednesday last a number of players assembled to mark out the grounds, on completion of which a good practice match was held.

We have great pleasure in announcing that Mr Edwards, baker, will not be leaving Te Awamutu, as he has arranged with Mr Christian, builder, to erect him an up-to-date bakery on his section in Roach Street. Judging from the plans already drawn up, the premises will be a great improvement on those formerly occupied by Mr Edwards and we feel sure that he will never regret making the venture to get re-established amongst us.

The many friends of Mr W. J. Astill will be pleased to hear that he is recovering from the serious illness which has for some time confined him.to his bed. Mr Astill is still at Otaki, where he is undergoing treatment, and it is anticipated that he will be about again at a fairly early date.

A final reminder is given of the dance to be held in the Town Hall to-night -under the auspices of the Te Awamutu Rudge Cycling Club. No trouble has been spared to make this event a success, and a very pleasant evening will no doubt result. Music is to be supplied by the Te Awamutu Dance Orchestra.

Mr W. P. Morton, who for some time past has been in charge of the Te Awamutu Railway Station has ruceived word of an intended transfer to Newmarket. We congratulate Mr Morton on having obtained well-earned promotion, and can only express our regret that it was found necessary to transfer him. We wish him all success in his new sphere, and feel sure that Newmarket is securing a most obliging officer, Mr McKenzie, senior clerk at Newmarket, will take up Mr Morton’s duties.

The Empire Picture Company will produce a splendid programme of moving pictures at the Town Hall, Te Awamutu. on Tuesday evening next, particulars of which appear in our advertising columns, and judging by Press reports in other towns, Te Awamutu patrons can rely on a most enjoyable and instructive exhibition.
