JUDGING SHEEP BY POINTS.
FEILDING PROPOSAL. At a meeting of the General Committee of the Feilding A. and P. Association, the sub-com-mittee set up for the purpose made the following recommenda-
tion as a remit to the Agricultural Conference : —That it be a recommendation to A. and P. associations that all judging of sheep be done on points on the following basis, namely, that an equal number of points be allotted for character, symmetry, and wool respectively. Mr Burrell supported the idea, saying if judges were to give the reasons why they gave their awards in a certain-way, it would be much more satisfactory, and would be of great benefit and encouragement -to young breeders. Mr Short also agreed that the idea was a good one, but it would be difficult to have it carried out. Fie had offered a prize in Palmerston for sheep to be judged on points, and three judges each gave the maximum number of points for character to a sheep which should not have received within ten points of the maximum. Fie would like to see it carried out. but was afraid it would be very difficult to have it satisfactorily done. Mr Reid said the trouble would be to have it carried out. He had asked a judge the reason for turning down a certain sheep, and the judge said: “Did you put that sheep in the competition ?” “Yes,” replied the exhibitor. “Well, you ought to be ashamed of • yourself,” said the judge. (Loud laughter.) “That was all the satisfaction I could get,” concluded Mr Reid.
