Wittington.

For some time past the fortunes of the Waipawa Racing Club have been dogged by the demon of cursed ill luck. The meeting, which is being held to-day, and which should have taken place on the Queen’s Birthday, promised to be one of the most successful held under the auspices of the club for some years. The acceptance list was a very large one and the quality of the competitors much better than is usually the case. The courso and surroundings were in capital order and a good deal of interest was evinced in the gathering. The elements, however, proved unpropitious ; rain descended in torrents, and a postponement was unavoidable. Although the weather cleared the heavy and incessant rain has tolcLa tale and the going is rather heavy, while it is not pleasant underfoot. The attendance is better than was expected, the Napier train bringing a good contingent of sportsmen, while local racegoers are in evidence. Speculation is fairly brisk, Mr George Abrahams and his attendants at the totalisators being kept going. Mr George Oakenfull, who has the bars, is doing a good trade, and Mr Watts supplies a first rate luncheon. Punctually to time the weighing bell rang out its summons for hostilities to begin with the Handicap Hack Hurdles, for which event eight sported silk. Xmas was the ono to gain the judge’s verdict. The Handicap Hack Race then claimed attention and Lady Lome landed the stake. The big event of the day then came on for decision, and the candidates were scanned m the paddock while undergoing their preparations. The order past the man in the box was Daphne, Will-o’-the-wisp, and Sirocco. Lady’s Chain landed the Stewards’ Stakes, and The Miner accounted for the Welter. The following are the results : Handicap Hack Hurdles, Of 35 sovssecond horse to receive 5 sovs from the stake.
