The Relief of Mafeking.

It was a secret relief column from Kimberley which compelled the Boe 1 8 to raise the siege of Mafeking. The British have occupied Lindley, lately made the Free State capital. Generals Duprez and Daniels have surrendered to Lord Methuen. Details of the relief of Mafeking Bhow that a flying column, with led horses and light mule-waggons carrying baggage, left Kimberley secretly via Barkly West. They left Taungs and Vryburg to the right, and thus nonplussed the Boers, who retired eastwards. They captured an abundance of cattle, and marched twenty miles daily. They reached Maretsani on the 11th without incident. The Daily News states that Delagoa Bay reports state that 80 of the German corps were killed at Mafeking. There is the greatest rejoicing und excitement throughout the British Empire at the relief of Mafeking. Lord Salisbury was at Windsor when the news of the relief of Mafeking reached the Queen.

Thousands serenaded Colonel Baden-Powell’s mother and sister at their residence in Hyde Park. Proeessions and cheering crowds blocked the London streets to-day. Enormous enthusiasm waß shown everywhere in the provinces. The churches, public and private buildings, and all vehicles were decorated with flags, everyone wearing the national colors. Canada, many American citizens, the colonies, and India are participating in the Empire’s rejoicings. There was intense excitement at Cape Town.
