Mafeking Day.

[Per Press Association.] Wellington, This day. The close of Mafeking Day was marked by a gathering of citizens at the general Post Office, at the invitation of the Hon. Mr Ward.

Among the speakers were Bishop Wallis, the Hon. Mr Walker, the Mayor, the Rev. J. Patterson, Colonel Penton, Messrs H. Beauchamp, J. Plummer, senr., T. M. Wilford, and the Hon. J. G. Ward.

The announcement by the latter that the Government proposed to send a most cordial invitation to Colonel Baden - Powell to visit New Zealand, as already has been done in the case of Lord Roberts, was received with great cheering. Such visits, he thought, would make greater and more real the empire of which we were so proud to belong. Should the invitations be accepted he was confident that the civic authorities would join hands with the Government in doing honour to their distinguished guests. The enthusiasm displayed was in keeping with that of the vast crowds in the city, and regret was expressed at the absence of MrSeddon. The Governor has cabled to her Majesty and the Imperial Government the hearty congratulations of New Zealanders on the relief of Mafeking, and informing them of the spontaneous de monstrations of joy and loyalty throughout the length and breadth of the colony.
