The Poverty Bay Caledonian Society's medal was preaentod to Maater Gilbert Boglo, at tbe Waipnknrau District School, at 3 o’clock oq Thursday afternoon. A number of ladies and a few gentlemen
were present, The proceedinga were opened with aome action aonga from the lower standard, and a Bong from tbe upper standards—both of which were most creditable to children and teacher The Hoo W. O Smith, M L.O, who waa in the chair, explained that io the unavoidable absence of Mr Gow, the chairman of the aobool committee, be, Mr Smith, had been naked to make the presentation of the Poverty Bay CaleSociety's gold medal, awarded for highest marks on the scholarship liat for the Hawke's Bay distriot, to Gilbert Bogle, whom he wished to congratulate on auch a very oreditable attainment. Nothing but hard work and p rsoveranoo oould have aobieved this end, and he was glad to see that Master Bogle waa following in the footsteps of his brother at the High 8011001. Io after life he would look with pride on this award, as he would also on tha silver medal sained aa Dux of the Waipnknran rohool ; nnd that if ho continued to go on ae he had boguo, he would cer tainly make bia mark io tho colony In oontinoation Mr Smith heartily congratulated Mr and Mm Bogla on their eon'a attainmenta, and also tho bend master aod the teachere of the sohool for not only this, bnt other scholarships gained, ae in tho eases of Arobie Bogle and Miss Bnohan, and that each results mast be gratifying to teaohers. In a few remarks to the ohildrtn Mr Smith reminded them that they oonld not all win gold medals, but conid ail try, and in trying would be sore to do good work for themselves. With tbe excel lent example of Master Bogle before them they could plainly see the resells of per severance and hard work—thoso who did well at school wire sure to do well in after life—it gave him great pleasure to preoeul the medal and he would ask if Mrs Gow would kindly consent to sffix it to Master Bogie's breast. Mrs Gow then fastened on the medol amid lend applanse. The medal is Io the form of a solid gold Malteseoross bearing the inscription ‘ H.
