THE LITERARY HACK.
Write, write, write, aye, both night and da y; Write, write, write, till the hair grows grey; Till hair grows grey, and sight gets dim, And brain itself begins to swim ; But this is nought, you please the crowd, Reading your squibs they laug-h aloud, Yes, laugh aloud with joyous glee, But little care for hard-up thee. Write, write, write, it will make some glad; W rite, write, write, though it drives you mad ; Though it drives you mad, men will smile, As them of their cares you beguile ; Pleasing to them but hard to you ; Racking your brain for something new ; Racking that brain never at ease, Always seeking something to please. Write, write, write, a slave to the pen ; Write, write, write, for your fellow men ; Thinking for them, heedless of self, Anxious not for sordid pelf, Doing what good you can by stealth, Dragging out life to make some laugh, But none to bow to the golden calf. W’rite, write, write, though only for bread; W r rite, write, write, you must be fed ; You must he fed, life to sustain, Tho’ “ dollars and dimes” you may not gain ; Nor name be known to busy throng, W r ho heedless sweep the time along, And know you not, with brain on rack, Jaded, forlorn, unfortunate hack.
