The cause of the awful Princess Alice maritime disaster is alleged to have been drunkenness on the part of the captain, pilot, and others.

“ That Heathen Ciiinee.” —An amusing arrest is recorded by the Inglewood correspondent of the Bendigo Independent : —“ One night the premises, of a Chinaman residing near the camp were broken into, and property stolen to the value of about £9. Suspicion fell on a Celestial named Ah King, who resides near the reservoir. On the police visiting his house, they found the door closed, but heard some one inside, and observed sundry articles of the stolen property being passed out through the chimney, which is not more than 6ft. high. Constable Living went quietly to this spot, and politely received the goods unobserved by the knowing Ah King, and when all had been passed out in the manner described, the occupant calmly opened the door with a salute —‘ Goodee morning, 3 r ou wantee speakee me ?’ On being interrogated about the robbery, he pleaded the usual ‘No savee’ —of course not being aware that the police knew about the property that had just made its exit through the chimney, but on John being introduced to the stolen goods carefully stacked on one side of the chimney, he looked mighty chapfallen, and, with hi 6 paramour, was taken to the lock-up. The same Chinaman narrowly escaped being hanged a short time since bv his countrvnien.
