NATIVE LAWSUITS BILL.
Our readers have already been acquainted by telegraph of the withdrawal of the above Bill by the Government. The following brief rej*ort of the proceedings we extract from a Wellington paper : There was a long and somewhat heated debate on this Bill, and it was withdrawn by the Attorney-General, who stated that the Bill had been brought in in the interest of European settlers in the district of Hawke’s Bay, and the day would come—before tie next session of Parliament most probably—when those who now opthe Bill would regret its withdrawal. Enormous costs had already been incurred, and further costs would have to be incurred ere any hope of settlement could Ikj arrived at. Mr Hislop regretted the withdrawal of the Bill, as he considered it might he so modified as to meet the wishes of all sides of the House. The question was then put that leave the chair, for the purpose of shelving the Bill, and Captain Russell called for a division when the Bill was thrown out by 47 to 21.
