The Stud. AT TO STAND THIS SEASON WEST CLIVE, The Imported Clydesdale Stallion LORD NELSON. Terms : — £ s . Two or more mares as per agreement. W. RUDDICK, Proprietor, West Clive. TO STAND THIS SEASON AT KAIKORA, HAWKE’S BAY, THE FASHIONABLY - BRED BLOOD STALLION “ANANIAS. 99

Terms : —Six Guineas for single mares ; two or more mares as per agreement. Ananias is a beautiful chestnut horse, rising 4 years old ; stands 16 hands 2 inches on good firm legs and capital feet; has great substance of bone, with blood of the highest quality. He has a very handsome head and beautiful muscular neck, well let in to fine deep slanting shoulders, short strong back, deep ribs, powerful quarters, grand action all round, and were it not for an accident received while a yearling, he would unquestionably have been one of the grandest racehorses in the colony. He was bred by E. G. Griffiths, Esq., Canterbury, and is by the famous Traducer (sire of Lurline, Calumny, Castaway, Fishhook, Templeton, Danebury, Jangler, Mufti, Trump Card, Natator, and Le Loup, who was, as a two-year-old was sold for 1150 guineas), dam Ticklish by Potentate, out of Miss Mettle by Touchit (imp.), &c. Potentate was by the celebrated Australian Sir Hercules, sire of the renowned Barb (one of the most successful i acehorses of any time), Yattendon (the sire of Chester, &c.), Waimea (the dam of Manuka and Papapa), Revoke (the dam of Trump Card), and Gitana (the dam of Calumny). It will thus be seen that Ananias is almost full brother to those grand animals Trump Card and Calumny. Trump Card is perhaps the best colt ever bred in the colony. As a two-year-old he won the Champagne Stakes at Canterbury, after which he was purchased by Mr Stead for something about 1500 sovs. As a three-year-old he carried off three Derbys —Canterbury, Wellington, and Dunedin. At Canterbury he ran second for the Cup, weight for age, and on the following day he easily won the Christchurch Plate. At Wellington, after winning the Derby, he ran Laura to a neck for the Cnp, giving the latter 2 years and Gibs. Later on we find him in the Publicans’ Handicap at Dunedin, giving Izaak Walton 2 years and some weight, and defeating that speedy son of Dainty Ariel and Fanny Fisher over his favorite distance, and at the same meeting he struggled home in front of that wonderful horse Templeton for the Queen’s Plate. Calumny w r as one of the grandest marcs that ever passed a winning post. After carrying off the Canterbury Derby and a number of other important races she went over to Australia, where she carried her owner’s colors to the front in several grandly contested races, carrying heavy weights, beating the best horses of the day, and that not under the most favorable circumstances. To furl her illustrate the superiority of the Traducer and Sir Hercules cross, and show the high estimation in which it is held by racing men, it may be mentioned that a foal by Traducer out of Waimea, when only a few days old, was sold by M Redwood for £SOO, an extraordinary price for a foal. Slanderer, who is nearly full bi other to Ananais, and who like him was prevented from racing by an accident, is now stand- j ing in Victoria at 10 guineas a mare. The ! service of Traducer is 100 guineas a mare, i and this can scarcely be wondered at, see- j ing that during the last racing season his j sons and daughters won stakes to the ! amount of £IO,OOO. Traducer was bred i in England, and is by The Libel, dam ; Arethusa. The Libel was by Pantaloon, out of Pasquinade, sister to Touchstone. From the above it must be patent to the j veriest amateur breeder that Ananias combines in himself some of the most successful strains of racing blood in the world, and as he is the only sire of the great Traducer blood now stand ing in the Province, breeders of racehorses should not lose the opportunity of putting Ihcir marcs to him, whilst his beautiful shape, perfect symmetry, good constitution, mild temper, and excellent capacity for carrying weight should induce gentlemen desirous of breeding superior weight-carrying harks to patronise him.
