The Russian Ambassador has informed the Porte that the withdrawal of the Russian troops from San Stefano has been stopped in consequence of murders which have occurred in the evacuated districts. St. Petersburg, October 11. The Press throughout Russia has assumed an aggressive tone.

An additional thirty-four miles of the north railway to Tam worth was opened by the Governor to-day. Brisbane, Tuesday. It is stated that a new goldfield has been discovered north of Blackall. There is a large hotly of quartz, with a good show of gold.

One of the piers near the centre of the ordinary traffic bridge here went this morning at nine o’clock, and the platform dropped with a crash into the river. The bridge is sinking rapidly. The inhabitants arc watching, expecting to see the whole structure disappear every minute. Christchurch, October 14. The total amount of beer duty collected in Christchurch since the Financial Statement was made is £1395 Us 9d, the whole of which amount will be refunded by the Collector of Customs on Thursday next, in consequence of the withdrawal of the Beer Duty Bill. ou.- _ Dunedin, October 14. Tne gents of the New Zealand ami Australian Land Company have received the following telegram, dated London, Octoiler 3 : —" This company is in no way involved in the failure of the City of Glasgow Bank.” Grahamstown, October 14. The man McKclvie, who was rescued from a pass on Friday, after being seven hour- buried underneath 2d feet of quartz, lies dangerously ill in the hospital, inflammation having supervened from the injuries he received in the fall. Otaki, October 14. The Felix Stowe, 500 tons, coal-laden, went ashore at four o’clock yesterday morning half a mil.- north of Otaki. The barque is breaking up. Her back is broken. The paper mills of Messrs Bagshaw, Norwich, have been destroyed by fire ; also a portion of the Great Eastern Company’s railway works at Ipswich. In a terrible fire at Birmingham, four persons perished, and at Pimlico, London, there has been a great timber lire. In the Austrian occupation of Bosnia, after a preliminary victory over the insurgents, the Austraians entered Serajero, where a desperate street conflict took Place, in which men, women, ami even hospital patients joined. Houses were boned, and the assailants suffocated. The n»s lost 3000 in killed and 700 wounded. The disarmament of the inhabitants was ordered under penalty of death. The losses incurred l»y the Austrian army have excited great exasperation in Hungary, and the Press indulges in loud Upbraiding of the Government.
The loan is not to be floated in London before ary next, ami the debentures will not • nt home till next month. The q j iter’s revenue returns show the total revenue for the quarter was £1,167,423, showing an increase over the com -spending quarter of last year of £69.219. The question of religious education in schools is again exciting attention. The Bishop of Melbourne supports a separate grain to the Catholics and Bible teaching
in schools. Sir John O’Shannassy’s Bill dealing with the subject will probably come on for discussion in the Assembly next week. The Government, it is said, will make it an open question, and probably the Roman Catholic members of the Ministry will support the Bill as it emanates from the Archiepiscopal Palace. Cup betting still dull. Trump Card has been scratched, and it is doubtful if Le Loup will start unless he is got fit in time. Melita is still first favorite. Business continues very dull, but the weather is very pleasant.
