Wealth or tiik Australian Colonies. —The San Francisco News Letter says the banking wealth of New Zealand and the Australian colonies is .£70,000,000, or about £35 per head ; a proportion which is certainly extraordinary, and much beyond that of the United States. Australian Railways.— The opening of the southern railway of Now South Wales to Wagga Wagga on September 3 was quite an event. Several members of the Ministry attended, and there were five thousand persons present. The railway systems of Victoria and New South Wales are now separated by an interval of only fifty or sixty miles. Maltreating a Girl. —The Launceston papers report that on Sunday, the 25th ult., a girl was taken to the hospital in a dangerous condition. She was suffering from a punctured wound in her chest. It was reported that she had received a severe beating, but on removing a piece of plaster from a wound the stab was clearly seen. She cyuld only be induced to say she had been •..'flipped with a rope. A Splendid Testimonial. —At a meeting of the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, held on July 17th, a cheque for £1225 19s 2d and a massive silver tankard were presented to Mr Fletcher Norton Menzies, in acknowledgement of his services as secretary during the past twelve years. The subscribers to the testimonial numbered 671, and the maximum amount of an individual subscription was limited to live guineas.
