NAPIER

Worship the Mayor r id Rent in his rpsignnheld office until such «... r whr appointed. Mr Stuart has been mayor of Napier ever since municipal institutions were established here, and although he may have committed several errors of judgment, yet, notwithstanding, he retires carrying with him the good wishes of all classes of the community. There are several rumors afloat as to who will be his successor. Several candidates are spoken of, including the well-known I r .-wer, Mr J. 11. Swuu. There is said, however, to he a dark as well as a white horse who will contest to obtain the honor —one a gentleman of high social position. In the meantime I shall not be surprised if Mr Vautier, the present Chairman of the Public Works Committee is elected for the office by the Council, and will occupy it until November, when the annual elections will l>e held. On Saturday there was quite a flutter among those who take an interest in politics, when it became known that the House of Representatives had given doublevoting power to the members of the Native race, at the instigation of the Native Min inter. Parties on both sides are becoming determined that the Natives shall not swamp tbe European votes, and the effect will be to give a block European vote against any person coming forward in the interests of the Grey party at the next election. This would be a matter for regret, inasmuch as it can only cause illfeeling between the two races. But the r<*M|M>nsibility must rest on those who have brought abjut such a state of affairs by ill-advised, or rather, ill-judged legislation. It is thought that the Government will drop nearly all their measures now before the House, and will hurry on the proceedings so as to be able to have the House prorogued before the end of next month. The Marionette Company left here for Christoliurch on Saturday, after doing an excellent business. The Company would have visited your district, but other engagements preclude*l Messrs Webb and Trotter from carrying out their intention. The second half-yearly meeting of the Napier Working Men’s Club is now being held. The Committee’s Report and Balance Sheet shew that the progress of the club has been most successful. The last balance-sheet shew' a large deficiency, but thanks for the indefatigable exertions and tact and ability displayed by President Cox all arears has been cleared off, and the Committee find itself £SO to the good. During the past half-year the carrying out of the real objects of the Club have been kept steadily in view, and no politics perluittcd to be discussed publicly in the r«M*iu, hut everything tending to promote g*kmi will and harmony is fostered. As I have to jw»st this lett -r before 8 o’clock this evening, I am ituuhlc to give you the I suits of the elections for new officers. The election of Lieut.-Gamcr for the captaincy of the Napier Artillery Volunt rs, caused l>y the resignation of Major Ron (ledge, has given much satisfa rtion. lie is a very public spirited gentleman. He holds he position of head of the K(*ri-stchOn>«l member of the fire brigade, and there is uot a public society with which he is not in son* • s iajH* or form connected. It is only to In- regretted that in a community such as X.ipi«-r, more men of his stamp are not to Ik* found.
