ORIGINAL POETRY. MAT DEN TRIP OF THE WANGANUI FROM LONDON TO LYTTELTON. Written by Patrick Daly The anchor is weighed, and the Ensign unfurled, While three cheers for the Isles of the Waterery World Reverberate loud, O’er the emigrant crowd. That throng on the deck of the ship Wanganui, • That in beauty and pride, bikinis the fast-rolling tide, Like a bird of the ocean, majestic and free. Now sadly we stand, waving parting adieus, To country and home fading fast from the, view ; While memories endearing, Our senses are stealing, To the fond scenes of childhood, for ever gone by, And to loved ones who mourn, And watch our return, Whose presence is felt when their visions are nigh. Past the Lizard we glide in the breath of the gale, When Atlantic expanding with pleasure we hail ; Where swift breezes blowing, And tides ever Mowing Like sweet anthems swelling in joyous Now, ebbing and bounding, Now, sighing or sounding, But ever intoning the ocean refrain. Anon in our wake o’er the Ocean’s blue rind, 'Lurked a foe unperceived in the shadowsbehind, Till the grim-herald seized A mate dearly prized, In the grasp, which no pitying mortal cai All skill's unavailing,— Life’s struggles last failing, His spirit took wing to its Saviour above
