The American Fleet.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Deputations from the Wellington branch of the Navy League urged the Premier today to use his best endeavours to arrange for a visit of the United States fleet or a portion of it, to Wellington. The Hon. T. Hislop, Mayor of Wellington, said that the request was made in no parochial spirit, but from a genuine desire that as many of the people of New Zealand as possible should meet their American cousins.
Sir Joseph Ward said he would be only too glad to convey the representations to the Admiral of the fleet on its arrival at Auckland. It would scarcely be right to attempt to torce things throughout the President of the United States. He had made representations to the Admiral of the Australasian Squadron with a view to the squadron receiving the fleet in these waters, but this, it was stated, was a matter for the Home authorities, to whom he had communicated on the subject. He would be only too glad if he could induce the fleet to come to Wellington. Anyway he hoped the members of Parliament would be able to go to Auckland to meet the fleet.
San Francisco, May 19. The American fleet has left San Francisco for Puget Sound.
