Chinese Seamen.
London, May 15. Mr Winston Churchill, President of the Board of Trade, replying to Mr J. Havelock Wilson, M.P. for Middlesborough, and founder of the National Amalgamated Seamen’s and Firemen’s Union, states that the recent unusual increase of Chinese seamen shipped at United Kingdom ports was a matter of serious concern, and was receiving the prompt and searching attention of the Prince of Wales. London, May 15. A number of Chinese seamen met with great violence at the hands of British sailors at Poplar, London, the object being to prevent the Chinese taking employment on British ships. The men allege that the Chinese are unable to pass the language test. The Chinese were hunted through many East End streets.
