The Prison Camps.
By Telegraph.—Press Association Wellington, Last Night.
Questioned this morning relative to the resolution passed by the Auckland West branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation concerning the escape of prisoners from Waiotapu, the Minister for Justice said that the men sent to Waiotapu are selected by the chief gaolers, great discrimination being exercised in this respect. The percentage of men who escaped was small. His experience had been that the system had been a great success, and he would not, for one, agree to its abolition. The men at the planting stations were given a chance to reform, which was denied them if kept in town gaols. The outcry against the men being sent to tree planting stations had not come from districts where the camps were located, but from outside places which were not conversant with the true facts.
