By Telegraph.—Press Association. AN INDIGNANT RATEPAYER. Thames, Last Night. The Omahu and Wharepoa drainage scheme was advanced another stage at the meeting of the Thames County Council a resolution being carried to establish the drainage district by special order. Very strong opposition to the scheme was made by Mr Cryer, a resident of the district, who strongly protested against the arbitrary action of the Council in carrying such a resolution without having given reasonable consideration to the prayer of, the petitioners against it. The speaker referred to the scheme as "robbery," and stated that he would refuse to pay any rates levied in that connection, even if he had to submit to imprisonment in consequence. In the course of a speech here last night, the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, said New Zealand should remember that a navy was required to protect her produce in transport from the Dominion to the markets in the Old Country, and he thought more than £40,000 should be paid. Germany, France, and Italy, were building navies to capture British trade, he added, and New Zealand should assist Britain in her efforts to retain her ground. The advantages of preferential trade were dwelt on.
