Cambridge Borough Council.
A special meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council was held last evening. There were present: The Mayor, Mr W. F. Buckland, and Crs. O'Toole, T. Richards, W. McVeagh, C. Reid, J. Ferguson and R. T. Tudehope. The Council approved of the district electors list submitted by the Town Clerk, and the Mayor, with Crs. Ferguson and McVeagh, were authorised to sign it as correct. A letter was read from Mr Richard Reynolds covering the resolutions passed at the public meeting of Leamington residents, in reference to retaining the old bridge over the Waikato on it present site. A petition on the same subject was also received. — The Mayor considered that if the Borough Council acquired control of the bridge, it would be compelled to maintain it for all time. If, moreover, anything happened to the bridge, he was not quite certain but what the Council could be made to rebuild it. The bridge was in the last stage of decay, and they would be foolish to have anything to do with it. They had built the new bidge with the idea that the old one would be done away with. Cr. O'Toole spoke strongly against the Borough Council seeking to acquire control of the bridge, and now "That the council does not see its way clear to take over the bridge." He considered it would take a couple of hundred pounds to put the bridge in order for any class of traffic, and the Council was not in a position to undertake this, neither was it justified in doing so.—Cr. Reid seconded the motion, and endorsed the Mayor's remarks that it was more than probable, in case of accident, the Leamington people could compel the bridge to be rebuilt. He did not think there was five years' life in the bridge.— Crs. Tudehope and Ferguson supported the motion, which on being put to the meeting was carried unanimonusly.—lt was agreed to inform Mr Reynolds promptly of the Council's decision, so that if necessary, the Waipa County Council could be approached by the Leamington people in regard to acquiring control of the bridge and keeping it open.
