The Dixon Case.
By Telegraph. —Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Interviewed regarding the Dixon case, the Minister declined to express his views on the subject, pending receipt of official information already asked for. My own opinion, from the procedure followed by the Justice Department in other similar cases, is that the Government will not interfere, and the law will be allowed to take its course, more especially as there appears to be considerable doubt as to whether there is any power to remit sentences when imposed in lieu of payment of debt, it being obvious that the imprisonment will be brought to a conclusion immediately the amount due is paid. Dunedin, Last Night. It is understood that the position taken up by the Government over the Dixon case at Drury is that it was a private prosecution for the recovery of a debt.
